Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia

Aide to former 2024 NPP flagbearer Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has dismissed suggestions that the party’s decision to hold its presidential primaries on January 31, 2026, was intended to favour his boss.

Speaking on JoyFM’s Top Story on Wednesday, June 18, Dennis Miracles Aboagye stated that the former Vice President is ready for the internal contest regardless of the chosen date.

He added that the 2024 NPP presidential flagbearer’s focus remains on engaging party delegates with his message of forward-looking leadership.

“I’m sure you are aware that Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has been through this several times, and so for him, it’s not an issue of what favours or what goes against him,” he said.

“What is important is that the date has been set, he awaits the rules and regulations guiding the process, and let the debates begin.”

He defended the National Executive Council’s authority, noting that the party’s constitution empowers it to determine such timelines.

“As of now, I have no idea which decision they have taken that favours or disfavours another,” he added.

Mr. Aboagye stressed that the upcoming primaries offer all aspirants, including Dr Bawumia, the same number of days to make their case to party delegates.

“We all have an equal number of days to engage the good people of our party and give them clear-cut reasons why they need a leader like Dr Mahamudu Bawumia to take this party to the 2028 elections—not just for the New Patriotic Party, but for this country as a whole.”

The NPP has officially scheduled its presidential primaries for Saturday, 31st January 2026.

The decision was taken at a crucial meeting of the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) held on Tuesday, June 17, 2025.

This announcement by the party’s General Secretary, Justin Frimpong Kodua, sets the stage for a decisive contest to elect the party’s flagbearer for the 2028 general elections.

“The Committee also spoke about the time for our presidential primaries. And again, the Committee agrees that that decision does not warrant amendment of our Constitution.

“And the National Council today also decided that the date for our presidential primaries is set for January 31, 2026. That will be the date that we shall hold our presidential primaries.”
