NPP chooses Owuo Mining CEO Kwame Asumadu as candidate for Akwatia by-election by consensus

The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has settled on the Chief Executive Officer of Owuo Mining Company, Solomon Kwame Asumadu, as its candidate for the Akwatia by-election.

The decision followed a series of surveys and research by a special committe, which began with the question of whether the party should hold a primary election — results of which advised against it.

Following that, the party’s National Executive Council further commissioned a survey in the constituency to determine who among the interested candidates, including former MP Ama Sey, should be selected.

At a press conference on Monday, July 28, addressed by the chairman of the Special Committee, Jeff Konadu, who is also the NPP Eastern Regional Chairman, the NPP announced that the outcome favoured Mr. Kwame Asumadu.

“The National Council of the past set up a committee, and we were tasked to find out who could be our candidate, or whether we would do primaries or not, so the team went to Akwatia in the constituency, had engagement, a lot of engagement, with the grassroots, electoral coordinators, police station officers, chiefs, opinion leaders and majority of the people said that for primaries, we should take it out,” a party official explained.

“And to cut a long story short, when it came, the party saw that they’ve settled on Kwame Asumadu Solomon. And so we reported back to Council, and Council also gave us the go ahead to engage further and to follow the due process to do a popular acclamation for Kwame Asumadu in the constituency,” he added.

This comes after Ernest Yaw Kumi, the Member of Parliament for Akwatia, was confirmed dead on Monday, July 7, after a short illness.

His death came just weeks after a court upheld his victory in the 2024 parliamentary elections.
