The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has, in a strongly worded letter, distanced itself from remarks made by its Bono Regional Chairman, Kwame Baffoe, against Archbishop Nicholas Duncan-Williams.

In a statement dated Monday, June 30, 2025, and shared by the Mpraeso lawmaker Davis Ansah Opoku, the General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party, Justin Frimpong Kodua, condemned remarks made by Kwame Baffoe also known as Abronye.

He stated that the comments were inconsistent with the party’s core values and principles.

Kodua indicated that the NPP, as a major political party, holds men of God and religious leaders in high esteem, specifically acknowledging the contributions Archbishop Duncan-Williams has made to national development.

“The attention of the National Secretariat of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has been drawn to public commentary made by the Bono Regional Chairman of the Party, Mr. Kwame Baffoe, alias Abronye DC, in which he made some unfortunate and unprovoked remarks about the internationally revered Archbishop Nicholas Duncan-Williams during a recent media engagement.

“The party unequivocally distance itself from those comments, and emphasise that they do not reflect the party’s values, beliefs, or official position. The New Patriotic Party holds religious leadership in high regard and recognises the immense contributions of Archbishop Duncan- Williams and the broader religious community to national development, peace, and moral guidance,” portions of the statement read.

Kodua acknowledged the party’s commitment to allowing its members to freely exercise their right to free speech, however, he emphasised that individuals must do so responsibly and with respect for such influential policymakers.

“While the NPP, as a democratic and inclusive political tradition, upholds the freedom of expression of its members, we also expect such freedom to be exercised with utmost responsibility, respect, and decorum, especially when addressing revered leaders of faith whose influence transcends partisan boundaries,” the statement continued.

It therefore called on the religious community to regard Abronye’s remarks as his personal views, which do not represent the position of the party in any way.

“We urge the general public, especially the Christian community, to treat Mr Baffoe’s personal views as entirely his own and not attributable to the New Patriotic Party.”

It concluded, “The party remains committed to fostering respectful engagement across all sectors of Ghanaian society and will continue to work in partnership with religious institutions for the collective advancement of our country.”

The party’s disclaimer follows verbal attacks made by Abronye against the religious leader during a recent media appearance.
