A leading member of the Movement for Change, Solomon Owusu, says the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is being irresponsible in opposition and should remain there for a long time.
He argued that instead of offering constructive criticism, the NPP continues to discredit progress being made under the current NDC administration while taking credit for economic recovery efforts they did not initiate.
Mr. Owusu said although his movement is also in opposition, the Alan Kyeremateng-led political group is being responsible and objective in assessing governance outcomes for the good of Ghanaians.
“There is a responsible opposition and an irresponsible opposition. These people are behaving as irresponsible opposition,” he said on Accra-based TV3’s New Day show on Wednesday, July 30.
He added, “If you are in opposition, and you are saying that your actions and inactions in the past is what is keeping the economy stabilised, why must we pray that you come to power? Then we would rather pray that you are always in opposition.”
Citing recent economic indicators, he said the reduction of inflation from 23.8% to 13.7%, appreciation of the cedi, and 5.3% GDP growth in the first quarter of 2025 are facts the NPP cannot deny.
He accused the party of abandoning its core duty as a credible alternative by engaging in “handout politics” and failing to make meaningful budget contributions as it used to do in the past.
