NPP is not acting contrary to the party’s constitution – Tiah Kabiru

Member of Parliament for Walewale, Dr Tiah Kabiru has defended the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) decision to hold its presidential primaries on Saturday, 31st January 2026, emphasising that the move is fully compliant with the party’s constitution.

Speaking on JoyNews’ AM Show, Dr Mohammed dismissed allegations that the party is acting outside its constitutional mandate.

The date for the primaries was confirmed by the NPP General Secretary, Justin Frimpong Kodua, following a meeting of the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) on Tuesday, June17.

“We are not doing anything contrary to the party’s constitution,” Dr Mohammed declared.

He explained that the party’s constitution explicitly sets out the timeline for electing its presidential candidate.

“The party’s constitution clearly states that we must elect our flagbearer at least two clear years before the general elections. What the NPP is doing is therefore in full compliance with the constitution.”

Addressing the debate over whether the party’s leadership selection process should be top-down or bottom-up, Dr Mohammed dismissed the argument as irrelevant.

“At the end of the day, those executives that will be elected will contest the elections. However, they are not the ones who will lead us into the national elections. So, the argument about either a top-down or bottom-up approach is neither here nor there.”

He challenged critics to specify which constitutional provisions they believe have been breached.

“When someone draws our attention to the constitution, I sometimes just ask them to show me the exact provision that has been violated.”

The NPP’s scheduled primaries in January 2026 is widely expected to be a pivotal moment as the party prepares to select its flagbearer for the 2028 general elections.
