NPP-led coalition protests Chief Justice suspension in Accra

Hundreds of demonstrators, primarily supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and allied minority parties, rallied in Accra on Monday, May 5, 2025, to protest the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo by President John Dramani Mahama.

The demonstration, marked by a sea of red attire, began at the Supreme Court, where the coalition submitted a petition demanding judicial intervention.

Led by Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the protesters marched through Accra’s main streets, delivering petitions to Parliament and the Jubilee House.

Afenyo-Markin urged judicial officials to defend judicial independence, warning against setting dangerous precedents.

He also cautioned against complacency, stating, “Touch one, touch all,” and emphasized the need for a fair and transparent judicial system.

The coalition’s petition called for the reversal of the Chief Justice’s suspension, fearing it could politicize the judiciary.

Acting Judicial Service Secretary, Dr. Cyracus Badinye Bapuuroh, assured the delegation that their petition would be forwarded for review.
