NPP to protest GH¢1 fuel levy, describes tax as “wicked” and “obnoxious”

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has declared its intention to hit the streets in protest following the passage of the Energy Sector Levy (Amendment) Bill, 2025, which introduces a controversial GH¢1 fuel levy.

Announcing the move in a Facebook post on Wednesday, June 4, NPP National Organiser Henry Nana Boakye revealed that the party, in collaboration with other political entities, will organize a demonstration in Kumasi to express public dissatisfaction.

He slammed the new levy, describing it as a “wicked” and “obnoxious” tax that unfairly burdens Ghanaians already grappling with economic hardships.

The bill was passed in Parliament on Tuesday, June 3, despite strong opposition from the Minority Caucus, who staged a walkout in protest. The caucus decried the tax as another layer of financial pressure on citizens struggling with the cost of living.

The government, however, argues that the levy is crucial for addressing a ballooning debt crisis in the energy sector and for ensuring a reliable power supply across the country. Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, who introduced the bill under a certificate of urgency, disclosed that the sector’s total debt had reached US$3.1 billion as of March 2025.

Despite these justifications, the NPP insists that the levy is an unjust imposition on the people, and they are mobilizing nationwide resistance to force a policy reversal.
