Alexander Afenyo-Markin is hopeful the NPP will recapture power in future Alexander Afenyo-Markin is hopeful the NPP will recapture power in future

The Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin, has stated that he is confidence that the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) will one day be elected into power by the electorates again.

Speaking on the floor of Parliament on Friday, February 28, 2025, Afenyo-Markin emphasised his certainty that his party will eventually become the Majority in Parliament, regardless of how long it takes for them to assume power as the government of the day.

According to him, there is no obstacle that can prevent such a day from coming to pass.

He added that even if he does not live long enough to witness the day the NPP is elected back into power, as long as the country continues to practice its democracy, that day will inevitably arrive.

“If today, you are of the view that in this debating chamber, they should call 7 Majority MPs and only 3 Minority MPs because you have the rule, I will not debate or let us break shoulders over this matter because I know that in as long as there is life, even if I am dead and gone and this democracy we have all established is in force, the NPP will someday come into power. Be it 100 years, the NPP will someday come,” he said.

Afenyo-Markin, also the Member of Parliament of Effutu, was responding to the Majority MPs’ demand for a larger number of their caucus members to be given the platform, while only a smaller number of Minority MPs should be granted the opportunity to speak during debates in the chamber.

This was after the Majority pushed for the time allotted for debates in the chamber to be proportional.

The lawmaker cautioned the Majority side about their actions, indicating that they are setting a dangerous precedence and that their behavior will eventually come back to haunt them.

“I would strongly urge upon the Majority Leader that some of these new precedents that they are introducing must be measured, because we are watching and taking notes. A day may come that references will be made,” he cautioned.
