A communications team member of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), Hamza Suhuyini, has accused former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia of plotting to control the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
The NPP has set January 31, 2026, as the date to elect its presidential candidate for the 2028 general elections, where it hopes to reclaim power.
The date was approved at a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held on Tuesday, June 17.
According to Hamza, the decision to hold the flagbearer election early is not based on a genuine intent to reform the party but rather a calculated move by Dr. Bawumia and his inner circle to tighten their grip on the party.
“And I can tell you without any shadow of doubt that the motivation behind the early congress is driven by the appetite for control by Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and his clique, and not by any agenda to rebuild,” he said during an appearance on Accra-based Channel One TV on Wednesday, June 18.
He, however, cautioned the former Vice President to learn from past experiences, especially from claims that previous internal processes were skewed in his favour.
“He must not allow these guys to destroy the responsibility the party will be entrusting upon him to reform, even before he starts that agenda. And this is harmless advice to him and his campaign team,” Hamza added.
Meanwhile, Hamza says he would be surprised if the NPP elects anyone other than Dr. Bawumia as its flagbearer.
According to him, Dr. Bawumia, who led the NPP into the 2024 general elections, remains the party’s best option to lead again in 2028.
