Former Member of Parliament for Asante Akim and stalwart of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Andy Appiah-Kubi, has criticised the party’s plan to elect its 2028 flagbearer without first electing new party executives.
The NPP has slated January 31, 2026, for its flagbearer elections—a decision that has drawn mixed reactions from party faithful and political watchers alike.
Speaking on Accra-based Starr FM, Appiah-Kubi warned that bypassing the election of party executives in favour of choosing a flagbearer could plunge the party into confusion and disorganisation.
“We need to disagree to come to some form of agreement at some point in time. I see that as a recipe for confusion and chaos because you find yourself so disorganised even now, with all kinds of opinions in the party about our performance. Indeed, we have to regroup and reorganise.
“Then all of a sudden, you are looking at a flagbearer to come. Is it the case that when we finish with the flagbearer, it will be his sole responsibility to do the reorganisation of the party?” he asked.
He added, “If that is what we think is the best approach, then perhaps that is the proposal on the table. But in any case, let’s look at the propriety of that proposal. We have a constitution that lays out the roadmap for what happens within the party, and we cannot act contrary to what it prescribes.
“So for now, what we must do is follow the direction of the Constitution. And according to it, we have always started from the polling stations and constituencies to the regional and national levels. That is the prescription in this present Constitution.”
