NPP’s rushed flagbearer polls skewed in favour of one candidate — Dr. Nyaho Tamakloe

Ghanaian statesman and former member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Nyaho Nyaho Tamakloe, says the party’s early plans to elect a new flagbearer appear to have been skewed in favour of a particular individual.

According to Dr. Nyaho Tamakloe, such a move, which believes say should have followed a full reorganisation from the bottom up and retrospection, ignores genuine concerns raised by some members.

“This process appears to be skewed in favour of a particular individual, ignoring genuine concerns raised by notable party figures,” he said, without mentioning any name, as quoted by Myjoyonline.

He warned that rushing to elect a flagbearer without an honest reflection on the party’s recent defeat could worsen its internal challenges.

“In a party that has just lost a major election, it is critical to conduct a thorough analysis of what went wrong. Rushing to elect a presidential candidate without honest reflection is a mistake,” Dr. Tamakloe noted.

The NPP, which lost the 2024 presidential election by a margin of 1.7 million votes despite campaigning to break the eight-year power cycle, has scheduled January 31, 2026, as the date to elect a new flagbearer.

The decision was taken during a National Executive Council meeting held on Tuesday, June 17, as part of reforms to reposition the party.

But Dr. Tamakloe says the current leadership, which he blames for the electoral defeat, cannot be trusted to lead the process of rebuilding.

“The leadership that led the party into defeat cannot be trusted to conduct a credible process that aims at returning the party to power in 2028. We need a transparent, inclusive approach that strictly adheres to the party’s constitution if we are serious about rebuilding the NPP,” he said.

So far, names such as former Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong, former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, former Education Minister Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, Abetifi MP Bryan Acheampong, and former General Secretary Kwabena Agyei Agyepong have been mentioned as possible contenders in the upcoming race.
