The Ranking Member on Parliament’s Defence and Interior Committee, Rev. John Ntim Fordjour has urged Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa to step down immediately after reports surfaced that Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang returned to Ghana on a private jet.
While in opposition, Ablakwa openly condemned such private jet trips by then President, Nana Akufo-Addo as extravagant and unnecessary overburdening the public purse, frequently publishing detailed accounts of expenses and expressing concerns about government spending.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Thursday, Ntim Fordjour referenced Ablakwa’s past statements and commitments, urging the Minister to adhere to his own principles.
“Okudzeto Ablakwa… do the honorable thing and resign without delay,” the former deputy minister remarked. “You have ensnared yourself with your own words!”
According to Ntim Fordjour, these earlier statements were merely “populist stunts” that garnered applause from his party but overlooked the reality that certain official needs might require the use of private jets.
“You were unequivocal in your promise. You challenged Ghanaians that you would resign as Minister if your Presidency utilized a private jet during their term,” Fordjour emphasised in his post.
He further stated that the current situation involving Vice President Opoku-Agyemang, whose flight was allegedly funded by public resources, constitutes a blatant violation of the principles that Ablakwa professed to uphold.
“Be a man of PRINCIPLES and RESIGN!” he implored.
As of the time of this report, Mr. Ablakwa has not publicly addressed Rev. Fordjour’s call for his resignation. The matter has already ignited political discussions and renewed scrutiny over government spending.
