Ashanti Region: Nurse found dead in suspected suicide attempt at Edwenase

There is grief in the quiet community of Edwenase in the Ashanti Region following the suspected suicide committed by a 37-year-old nurse at the Kokofu Government Hospital.

The nurse, identified as Akosua Adutwuwaa, was found dead in her family home on Sunday morning under heartbreaking circumstances that have shocked relatives and neighbors.

According to her distraught mother, Akosua began her Sunday morning as she always did—waking up early, performing household chores, and preparing porridge for her only child, a two-year-old daughter.

There were no visible signs that anything was amiss. However, as the family got ready for church between 7 and 8 a.m., they realized Akosua was missing from the house.

A desperate search of the house and its surroundings soon turned into a nightmare when Akosua’s lifeless body was discovered in one of the rooms. She had reportedly hanged herself from a ceiling fan using a white rope.

The shocking scene has plunged her family into deep mourning and left the entire Edwenase community grappling for answers.

Residents who spoke to this reporter described the late nurse as quiet, respectful, and hardworking. Many noted her love for her young daughter and the quality of service she provided to patients at Kokofu Government Hospital.

This tragic incident, they say, is the first of its kind in the area, adding to the disbelief and sorrow that now hangs over Edwenase.

Her body has since been taken to the Pramso Hospital morgue, where a post-mortem examination will be conducted under the supervision of the Ashanti South Regional Police Command.

Investigators say they are working tirelessly to determine the full circumstances surrounding Akosua’s death and to find out whether any underlying factors may have caused her death.

The management of Kokofu Government Hospital has also expressed deep sadness over the loss. In a brief statement, the hospital described Akosua as a dedicated and compassionate nurse whose absence will be deeply felt by both staff and patients.

Hospital authorities have pledged to provide psychological support for staff to help them cope with the loss of their beloved colleague.

Meanwhile, friends and sympathizers have flooded social media with heartfelt tributes and words of comfort for her grieving family.

Many have pledged support for Akosua’s young daughter, who now faces an uncertain future without her mother’s care and love.

This tragic incident has once again brought the issue of mental health among healthcare workers into sharp focus.

Advocates are calling for urgent measures to provide better support systems for medical professionals, including regular mental health checks, counseling services, and open conversations about emotional well-being.

As investigations continue, the Edwenase community mourns the loss of not just a nurse, but a mother, daughter, and cherished member of society whose sudden death leaves a trail of pain and unanswered questions.
