The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has urged the public to strictly observe COVID-19 preventive protocols following a recent resurgence of cases, particularly within the University of Ghana community.
Although the World Health Organization (WHO) no longer considers COVID-19 a public health emergency of international concern, the GHS says the virus remains a threat and seasonal outbreaks are still expected globally.
In a press release issued on Wednesday, June 26, the Service disclosed that Ghana had experienced a steady decline in COVID-19 cases for over a year until the recent detection on the University of Ghana campus.
“In recent weeks, an uptick in COVID-19 cases has been observed, currently limited to the University of Ghana community. GHS is actively collaborating with the University authorities to contain the outbreak and review measures in response to the evolving situation,” the statement read in part.
The affected persons, according to the GHS, are experiencing only mild symptoms with no hospital admissions so far.
However, Ghanaians have been cautioned to report immediately to a health facility if they experience symptoms such as fever, cough, sore throat, body weakness, or loss of smell and taste.
The Service outlined key preventive measures the public must adhere to: maintain social distancing, wear masks in enclosed spaces, wash hands frequently, avoid large gatherings, and stay home if unwell.
Meanwhile, in a statement issued on Wednesday, June 25, signed by Dean of Students, Rosina I. Kyeremateng, suspended all social gatherings.
