Obuasi East Municipal Assembly exceeds revenue target, outlines development plans

The Obuasi East Municipal Assembly has achieved a significant milestone in revenue mobilization, surpassing its internally generated revenue target for the period between January and May 31, 2025.

The Assembly collected GH₵1,005,127.58, exceeding its projected target of GH₵915,420.00, representing a performance of 110 percent.

Delivering his sessional address at the General Assembly Meeting held on July 9 and 10, 2025, Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) Hon. William Kofi Adzowu described the achievement as a remarkable improvement in the Assembly’s revenue mobilization efforts. He praised the revenue unit for its dedication and effectiveness in meeting the target.

Hon. Adzowu attributed the success to key revenue sources, including sand and stone royalties, building and development permit fees, property rates, and daily market tolls. He emphasized that although the Assembly has performed well, there is still room for improvement in other areas to further boost revenue generation.

“We have improved and exceeded our revenue targets as a result of the prudent measures we have put in place to collect revenue,” Hon. Adzowu stated. He noted that initiatives such as valuing properties within the municipality to ensure accurate property rate assessments, using billing software for full payment recovery, timely commission payments to revenue collectors, building a reliable revenue database, and providing a vehicle to the Works Department have all contributed to this achievement.

Touching on national development priorities, the MCE briefed the Assembly on two key government flagship initiatives—the 24-Hour Economy and the Feed Ghana Programme (FGP).

On the 24-Hour Economy, Hon. Adzowu informed Assembly Members that the program was officially launched by President John Dramani Mahama on July 3, 2025, in Accra. The initiative aims to accelerate economic growth, increase employment, and boost foreign exchange through expanded export activity.

Speaking to the media after the session, Hon. Adzowu revealed that the Assembly is aligning its local development agenda with the 24-Hour Economy initiative. He announced plans to relocate wood sellers from their current location to a well-prepared industrial park at Boete. This relocation will pave the way for the development of an ultra-modern day-and-night market, complete with vehicle parking areas and lorry stations, aimed at enhancing business operations in the municipality.

To facilitate the relocation, the Assembly intends to construct nine market sheds in phases. The proposed site will also feature auxiliary facilities such as a health center, police station, school, and lorry terminal to ensure a fully functional and secure trading environment.

On the Feed Ghana Programme, Hon. Adzowu described it as a government-led agricultural intervention aimed at transforming Ghana’s agricultural sector. The program seeks to ensure food security, reduce import dependency, create sustainable jobs, and boost domestic production and value addition. He stated that the Agriculture Department of the Assembly is actively registering farmers and sensitizing them about the program to ensure full participation.

The General Assembly meeting was chaired by the Presiding Member, Hon. Alfred Fosu Donkor.
