Okyeman officials engaging some of the miners
The Okyeman Environmental Protection Brigade has launched a bold and decisive operation to clamp down on illegal mining activities along the Birim River and other nearby water bodies in the Eastern Region.
The mission, which officially began on April 17, 2025, seeks to restore the river’s natural state, protect the environment, and promote sustainable mining practices across Okyeman.
The brigade is spearheaded by Barimah Dr Kwabena Awuah Parker I, Chief of Sokode-Juaso, and Barimah Pobi Asomaning III, Chief of Akyem Akwadum. The team conducted a comprehensive tour of mining sites in communities such as Akyem Akropong, Akyem Asikam, Kyebi Pano, Kyebi Habitat, Kyebi Apapam, and Kyebi Adadentem.
During the tour, they assessed the extent of environmental degradation and personally cautioned illegal miners to vacate riverbanks and cease operations that threaten the region’s ecosystem.
It was observed that many miners had blocked the natural flow of the river and polluted it with harmful chemicals and sediments. However, one mining firm, Doza Mining Company, stood out for its responsible practices.
The company had constructed its own pond for operations, avoiding direct interference with the Birim River. The taskforce commended Doza Mining Company for its efforts to comply with environmental standards.
During the operation, the team seized a water pumping machine found at one of the illegal mining sites, where the devastation was described as “beyond comprehension.”
The seizure marked a firm warning to illegal operators that enforcement actions will no longer be limited to verbal cautioning.
Speaking to journalists, Barimah Pobi Asomaning III conveyed the concerns of Osagyefo Amoatia Ofori Panin, Okyenhene, who has expressed deep worry over the increasing destruction of the Birim River—a vital source of drinking water for residents of Okyeman and its environs.
He emphasised that the river has been severely polluted, adding that miners have been educated on the legal and environmentally safe methods of operation, including maintaining a 50-metre buffer zone from the riverbanks and adopting man-made rotating dams for extraction.
“Osagyefo Amoatia Ofori Panin has given us a clear mandate to ensure the total eradication of illegal mining along the Birim River and other affected water bodies in the enclave,” Barimah Asomaning said.
“Our observations confirm that some miners are operating directly in the river. Today’s operation serves as a final warning. On our next visit, violators will be arrested and prosecuted according to the law,” he said.
The Okyeman Environmental Protection Brigade’s operation marks a crucial step in reversing the environmental damage caused by illegal mining and restoring the dignity and sustainability of Ghana’s cherished natural resources.
