A Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) student has been detained in connection with the gruesome murder of Joana Deladem Yabani, a final-year Biological Sciences student.

The suspect, believed to be the mastermind behind the killing, was captured following a review of CCTV footage on campus, according to the university.

According to KNUST management, the suspect, a fellow student who lives in the same hostel as the deceased, was found in possession of the garments used in the crime. Police have already retrieved the items as evidence.

“A suspect, believed to be the mastermind behind the gruesome murder of Miss Joana Deladem Yabani, a final-year Biological Science student at KNUST, has been apprehended by the Regional Police for interrogation following a thorough review of our internal CCTV footages,” the statement read in part.

The institution promised the public and students that in order to save lives and stop such occurrences, campus security has been greatly increased.

“We appeal to all students and members of the University Community to remain calm as the police continue their diligent investigations to uncover the full details surrounding this unfortunate incident,” it added.
