Only Bawumia can lift NPP to an admirable level — Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu

Former Majority Leader in Parliament and MP for Suame, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, has described Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as the most capable person to lead the New Patriotic Party (NPP) as its flagbearer.

According to him, at this point in the party’s history, the NPP requires a flagbearer who can lift the party to a level admired by all, not just anyone.

Speaking to 1957 News on Monday, June 23, the veteran lawmaker stressed that the integrity of the individual seeking to lead the NPP is more important than any other consideration.

“You are looking at the confidence of the person. You are looking at the integrity of the person, the character of the person.

“You are looking at the ingenuity of the person to be able to really raise the fortunes of this party to the level that we all cherish. And that person is no other than Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia,” he stated.

He also addressed the subtle debate between Dr. Bawumia and fellow flagbearer hopeful Kennedy Agyapong over who has more financial muscle to support the party.

According to him, the party will not choose a flagbearer based on wealth alone, arguing that no single individual can solely finance the party’s activities.

“You see, if you look at our party’s constitution, the qualifications for a presidential candidate are that you must have been in the party for at least four years and be in good standing. These are the two major requirements. But beyond that, governance is not about someone claiming they have money to do this or that,” he said.

He, however, revealed that “Bawumia contributed more resources to the NPP’s 2024 campaign than anyone else. His contribution was enormous. That is not to say others didn’t help—some did—but he did much more. If you listen to him, he acknowledges the potential of other people.”

This comes after the opposition party, following its National Executive Council meeting on Tuesday, June 17, slated January 31, 2026, for its flagbearer elections.
