The Ghana Federation of Labour (GFL) has issued a strong appeal to opposition political parties, particularly the New Patriotic Party (NPP), urging them to abandon divisive tactics and instead support the government’s efforts to alleviate hardship and promote development across the country.
Speaking in Tema, GFL Secretary General Mr. Abraham Koomson criticised the NPP for what he described as “a politics of obstruction,” warning that the party’s consistent attempts to undermine the ruling government were not only undemocratic but detrimental to national unity and progress.
“The politics of opposition parties, especially the main opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), trying hard to offer negative projections to everything is not a healthy democratic practice,” Mr. Koomson stated.
He argued that Ghanaians are beginning to experience renewed hope and a shift in governance under President John Dramani Mahama’s leadership—a sharp contrast, he said, to the previous administration.
“Ghana is going through an unprecedented governance system, which demands all well-meaning Ghanaians must join hands with the ruling party to enhance our lives. If life is good, it’s not only members of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) who will enjoy it.”
He accused the NPP leadership and what he termed its “micro-minority in Parliament” of hypocrisy, calling them “Doctor Do Nothing.” According to Mr. Koomson, the NPP presided over the collapse of critical sectors—including banking, manufacturing, agriculture, and healthcare—while leaving behind a legacy of excessive taxation and widespread corruption.
Despite this, Mr. Koomson said the NPP continues to “work against the interests of Ghanaians with negative attacks” even as they try to take credit for recent economic improvements under the current administration.
He pointed to the recent appreciation of the cedi as an example, saying it was the result of the Mahama administration’s effective economic management, not a continuation of any foundation laid by the NPP.
“It is absurd, irritating, and an insult to the integrity of Ghanaians for the NPP to continue making noise about their economic accomplishment,” he declared. “The NPP should remind us of the scary eight years again.”
Refuting NPP claims that it resolved Ghana’s energy crisis in 2017, Mr. Koomson insisted that the issue had already been addressed under former President Mahama’s tenure. He also criticised the NPP’s habit of appropriating credit for projects initiated by previous governments.
“In opposition, the NPP has all the answers to Ghana’s economic, social, political, and security issues… you just name it. They always claimed to have the men, but most often when offered the opportunity to rule, the men become drivers’ mates,” he said.
Mr. Koomson called on President Mahama, Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang, and their Cabinet to remain focused on their mandate, implement transformative policies, and ignore distractions from the opposition.
He cautioned the public against misinformation and called on the NPP to “take responsibility for their actions and stop claiming credit for others’ achievements.”
“What former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and former Vice President Dr. Bawumia, who was the party’s Election 2024 Presidential Candidate, failed to achieve in eight years with over a hundred ministers, President Mahama and his team of less than 60 ministers have achieved and gone beyond in just five months,” Mr. Koomson concluded.
