The McDan Foundation over the weekend donated assorted food items to more than 7,000 widows from 15 communities in the Greater Accra Region.

The widows were also offered free health screening as part of the gesture.

The donation, which took place at Mantse Agbonaa in James Town, Accra, aimed to provide relief to vulnerable widows facing financial hardship.

The initiative, a flagship programme of the McDan Foundation, the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) arm of the McDan Group, was organised in partnership with RIDNE Food Consortium, a Ukrainian food and agriculture company.

Each widow received a 5kg bag of rice, assorted soft drinks, packs of biscuits, and salt from the Ada Songor Salt Project by Electrochem Ghana Limited.

In addition, special food packages from RIDNE Food Consortium contained essential items such as wheat flour, canned turkey meat, canned sardines, pasta, dry peas, cookies, sunflower oil, rice cakes, and condensed canned milk were also donated.

Founder of the McDan Foundation, Daniel McKorley, emphasised the importance of supporting widows, particularly those struggling with poverty after the loss of their husbands.

“Many widows, especially the elderly and those who depended entirely on their husbands are left in difficult situations.”

“It is our duty as a society to show them compassion and provide assistance,” he said.

The Commercial Director of RIDNE, Sergii Kovalchuk, expressed his satisfaction with the partnership, stating that his company was committed to initiatives that improve the lives of vulnerable people, especially widows and orphans.

He assured that RIDNE would continue similar interventions in Ghana and beyond.

He commended the McDan Foundation for its commitment to improving the welfare of underprivileged individuals, particularly widows, through strategic collaborations and social interventions.

Awo Adjeley Arthur described the gesture as a major relief, while 68-year-old Christable Nortey said the donation and free health screening were invaluable to her.

Another beneficiary, Mercy Oppong, said “This is something I never get easily due to financial constraints so I am very happy to be counted among the lucky ones today.
