The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Kingsford Sumana Bagbin, has welcomed and sworn in Ewurabena Aubynn as the new Member of Parliament for Ablekuma North.
Her swearing-in brings the House to its full membership of 276, with 41 of them being women.
Speaking on the floor of Parliament during the ceremony on Tuesday, July 22, Mr Bagbin described the development as a blessing to both the House and Ghana’s democracy.
“The House is now blessed with the final member. This has increased the number of female members to 41. If this is not a blessing, what else?” he said.
The Ablekuma North seat had remained vacant for over six months due to disputes that marred the collation of the 2024 election results.
Following a rerun on Friday, July 11, Aubynn secured victory over the New Patriotic Party’s Nana Akua Owusu Afriyie, giving the National Democratic Congress (NDC) a two-thirds majority in Parliament.
Meanwhile, the NPP Minority caucus staged a walkout from the ceremony after their attempt to make a statement was blocked by the Speaker.
