Parliament’s Appointments Committee will commence vetting President John Dramani Mahama’s nominees to the Supreme Court in a three-day public hearing scheduled from Monday, June 16 to Wednesday, June 18, 2025.
The President has put forward seven Justices of the Court of Appeal for elevation to the apex court, acting under Article 144(2) of the 1992 Constitution, a constitutional mandate that allows the President to appoint justices in consultation with the Judicial Council and in approval by Parliament.
The distinguished nominees are:
Justice Sir Dennis Dominic Adjei
Justice Gbiel Simon Suurbaareh
Justice Senyo Dzamefe
Justice Kweku Tawiah Ackaah-Boafo
Justice Philip Bright Mensah
Justice Janapare Bartels-Kodwo
Justice Hafisata Amaleboba
Once confirmed, their appointment will significantly reinforce the bench of the Supreme Court — a critical institution in safeguarding constitutional governance and the rule of law.
The hearings will scrutinise each nominee’s legal qualifications, judicial temperament, experience, and constitutional philosophy. With the Supreme Court at the heart of Ghana’s democracy, legal observers and the general public alike are expected to pay close attention to the proceedings, which could shape the nation’s jurisprudence for years to come.
The vetting marks a pivotal moment in the President’s judicial reform agenda, with Parliament tasked with ensuring only the most capable and impartial legal minds ascend to the country’s highest court.
