Parliament has suspended its sitting following the sudden and unexpected death of Ernest Yaw Kumi, Member of Parliament for Akwatia.
The adjournment was prompted by an emotional appeal from Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, who broke the devastating news to the House during Monday’s session.
He described Kumi’s passing as a total shock, noting that there had been no indication the first-time MP was unwell.
Kumi, who entered Parliament following the 2024 elections, was widely regarded by colleagues as energetic, principled, and deeply committed to public service.
Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga supported the motion for adjournment, and the request was upheld by First Deputy Speaker Bernard Ahiafor. In honour of the fallen lawmaker, parliamentary proceedings have been suspended until Tuesday, July 8.
Since news of his death broke, tributes have poured in from across the political divide, with MPs, constituents, and party leaders praising Kumi’s humility, work ethic, and unwavering dedication to the people of Akwatia and the nation.
