Party in power doesn’t matter; I can support NDC to make Ghana better — Ex-NPP MP

Former Member of Parliament for Asante Akim North, Andy Appiah-Kubi, says he is ready to support the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to make Ghana better if the need arises.

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) stalwart argued that national interest must override political loyalty, stressing that the wellbeing of Ghanaians is more important than which party is in power.

Speaking on Accra-based Starr FM, he also lauded the NDC government’s recent economic management, pointing to the appreciation of the cedi, which has strengthened from about GHS15 to GHS12 against major foreign currencies within six months.

“We are Ghanaians. Whichever political party is on the throne doesn’t matter as much as the generality of Ghanaians feel safe and comfortable. So for me, if NDC is doing it and I have any contribution to make it happen, I would, by all means, do it. Because it’s Ghana, it’s not NDC or NPP Ghana,” he stated.

“You see, anyhow you feel the presence of freedom, you appreciate it. For now, there has been this exchange rate appreciation that is changing to our benefit. Appreciate that they’ve done well however they did it,” he told Accra-based Starr FM.

“They’ve done well because Ghanaians feel it, and they think that, yes, if I want to change dollar, I have a better rate than before. I only pray that they can sustain it,” he added.

According to him, sustaining the gains would benefit the entire country. “I am praying it’s not short-lived so that it can be sustained. In fact, if they are able to sustain it, I give them the praises—they’ve done well, you see—because it is something that we expected our then Minister Ofori-Atta to do.”
