Member of Parliament for Old Tafo, Vincent Ekow Assafuah, has petitioned President John Dramani Mahama to urgently push for the passage of the anti-gay bill under a certificate of urgency.
His petition comes on the back of viral images showing two gay men, reportedly South African nationals, posing intimately at national monuments such as the Independence Square and the Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum.
In the letter dated Thursday, June 26, Ekow Assafuah described the act as a “spiritual insult” and a threat to the moral conscience of the nation, stating that failure to act swiftly will embolden what he called a “creeping agenda.”
He called on President Mahama to rise to the occasion and demonstrate moral leadership, insisting that the anti-LGBTQ+ legislation must receive urgent attention in the name of Ghana’s cultural and religious values.
“This is not just a social issue, it is a moral affront and a spiritual insult to the conscience of our nation,” he wrote in the petition.
“We cannot sit by and watch our national symbols hijacked for an agenda that offends the conscience of this nation,” it added.
Ekow Assafuah further reminded the President of his earlier promise to religious leaders to sign the bill into law when elected into office.
According to the NPP lawmaker, if the “Dumsor Levy” could be passed under a certificate of urgency, then the defence of Ghana’s cultural identity deserves even greater priority.
