President John Dramani Mahama has given firm assurance to nursing trainees across the country that the government has established a new mechanism to guarantee the automatic monthly payment of their long-awaited allowances.
Addressing a durbar of chiefs and people of the North East Region in Nalerigu as part of his nationwide Thank You Tour, President Mahama said the system was designed to ensure that once activated, trainees would receive their allowances regularly and without delays.
“We have designed it such that your payment will come automatically every month. Every month you will receive your money,” the President said to applause from the crowd.
He added that government had made provision for the payments in the 2025 budget, which took effect from January. As a result, trainees would not only begin to receive their monthly stipends starting next month (July), but would also be paid all arrears from January to June.
“The budget was made from January and so when we start paying you next month, the arrears from January to June will be paid to you,” President Mahama reaffirmed.
The President is currently touring all regions of Ghana to thank citizens for their overwhelming support in the December 7, 2024, general election, which saw him re-elected as President on the ticket of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
During his address, President Mahama also highlighted significant developments in the education sector. He announced that the Nalerigu College of Nursing and Midwifery had been earmarked for upgrading into a degree-awarding institution, part of a broader plan to modernize health training colleges nationwide.
He stressed the importance of education in Ghana’s long-term development, describing it as “the nation’s greatest equalizer.” No region, he noted, could hope to progress if its youth were left behind.
President Mahama further assured the people of Gambaga that the government remained committed to completing stalled infrastructure at the Gambaga College of Education.
He revealed that, following his directive, the GETFund Administrator had completed an assessment of the halted projects on campus.
“We expect construction to resume in the third quarter of this year. The contractor will be on site at the Gambaga College of Education new site,” the President confirmed.
The visit forms part of President Mahama’s efforts to reconnect with communities, reaffirm development promises, and personally express gratitude to Ghanaians for their renewed trust in his leadership.
