Parts of the Upper East Region are grappling with a surge in illegal mining activities, particularly in districts such as Bongo, Talensi, Nabdam, and the Kassena-Nankana Municipality.
On Friday, May 16, 2025, Upper East Regional Minister, Hon. Donatus Akamugri, accompanied by security personnel, visited several illegal mining sites in Nabdam, Bongo, and Naaga-Sakombiisi to assess the extent of environmental destruction caused by the operations.
The security operation, dubbed “SWOOP,” led to the destruction of several pieces of mining equipment, including seven compressors, eight grinding motors, tents used as shelters, and motorbikes.
Hon. Akamugri expressed serious concern about the widespread environmental degradation and the social impact of the galamsey activities, particularly the destruction of farmlands. “I received a written petition from the Naaga-Sakombiisi community, that illegal mining is taking place in their area, and the activities have been reported to authorities but no action has been taken, that’s why they reported directly to the RCC,” the Minister stated.
Residents of the affected communities are alarmed by the use of harmful chemicals in the mining process, raising fears of long-term health implications and increased risk of disease outbreaks.
Another troubling development reported by locals is the illegal tapping of electricity by miners from community transformers. This unauthorized use has led to increased demand and power shortages in several households.
The Regional Minister emphasized the urgent need for a collaborative and multi-sectoral approach to tackling the menace of illegal mining. He called for the active involvement of local communities, law enforcement agencies, and relevant government institutions to stem the tide.
He also urged residents to report any suspicious or illegal mining activities to the appropriate authorities, stressing that community vigilance is vital to safeguarding the environment and public health in the region.
