A majority of assembly members in the Atwima Mponnua district of the Ashanti region are calling on President Mahama to urgently nominate Sakina Oforiwaa as the District Chief Executive (DCE), arguing that her selection would ensure a quick and easy endorsement and expedite development in the region.
Over 35 assembly members voiced their support during a press conference, emphasising Oforiwaa’s competence, work ethic, unifying qualities, and widespread popularity within the district.
Salifu David, Assembly Member for the Anansu Electoral area, speaking on behalf of the group, stated that while they respect the President’s decision-making process, they believe Oforiwaa, a member of the Ashanti Regional Communications team of the NDC, is the clear choice of the majority. He described her as “very active and a unifier irrespective of people’s political affiliations.”
“We’ve known her to be a unifier and someone who respects and shows concern for people for a long time. Even in opposition, she consistently demonstrated this trait. She’d sometimes surprise you with a call, regardless of your political affiliation. These qualities aren’t new; we’ve seen her kindness and approachability for years, which is why many of us believe she’d make a great DCE for our district,” the assembly members revealed.
The assembly members emphasised Oforiwaa’s unifying abilities, citing her capacity to bridge the gap between different political parties. They also highlighted her long-standing commitment to the community, noting her consistent support even during times of opposition.
“You all saw how the assembly members cheered up when her name was mentioned during our press conference here, and this should tell you and the president the kind of love all the assembly members have for her,” David continued. “We don’t want to say anything, but all that we are saying is that the president should mention her name, provided he wants a smooth, peaceful and easy endorsement.”
They asserted that Oforiwaa is the most qualified candidate for the post, dismissing any opposition allegations. The assembly members also urged the President and the vetting committee, led by the national chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, to disregard any negative propaganda surrounding Oforiwaa and her husband, fearing that it could lead to a mistake in rejecting the people’s preferred candidate.
The assembly members further characterised Sakina Oforiwaa as a unifier capable of bridging partisan divides, an approachable and inclusive leader, and someone deeply committed to supporting the community.
They emphasised her long-standing generosity, citing instances of financial contributions, the donation of approximately 30 motorbikes, and her provision of food and resources during past elections, which was extended even to members of the opposing parties.
The assembly members pointed out that Atwima Mponnua is lagging behind other districts in the region in terms of development due to the delay in appointing a DCE and urged the President to expedite the selection process.
This plea underscores the importance of the DCE selection for the Atwima Mponnua district and highlights the assembly members’ strong preference for Mrs. Sakina Oforiwaa.
Justice Nkrumah, the district’s Presiding Member (PM) and assembly member for the Bayerebon Electoral area, urged the president to expedite the selection process, citing its adverse impact on development, assembly procedures, and other duties typically handled by the DCE.
“It is crucial that the president announces the name as soon as possible,” he emphasised.
