The Ghana Police Service has extended an invitation to the Minority Leader, Hon. Alexander Afenyo-Markin, to assist in an investigation after he allegedly assaulted a police officer during a demonstration on Monday, May 5, 2025, in Accra.

The protest was held against the process to remove the Chief Justice, Gertrude Araba Sackey Torkornoo.

According to the Police, following a review of the incident, the Service has written to the Right Honourable Speaker of Parliament requesting the release of Hon. Alexander Afenyo-Markin to assist in the ongoing investigation.

“The officer in question will also be assisting with the investigation,” the statement added.

Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin, is seen in a widely circulated video in a visibly agitated state, directing his anger toward one of the police officers during the #SaveTheJudiciaryDemo.

In the video, the reason for the MP’s anger remains unclear, and it is not known what specifically provoked him. However, he is seen angrily addressing the officers from behind the barricades and then appears to knock the head of one officer, escalating the confrontation.

In an effort to de-escalate the situation, Richard Ahiagbah, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Director of Communications, is seen attempting to calm the MP and prevent the situation from worsening.

The police officer involved remained non-reactive during the incident, while his colleagues were seen trying to calm him afterward.

The demonstration, organized by political parties and led by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) under the banner #SaveTheJudiciaryDemo, was intended to defend the constitution, uphold judicial independence, and protest the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Sackey Torkornoo.
