Police in the Ashanti Region have opened a criminal investigation after a shooting incident occurred at Adventist Senior High School in Kumasi on Friday, April 4, around midday.
According to a statement from the Regional Police Command, a 16-year-old second-year student smuggled a locally made pistol into the school, loaded with one round of BB ammunition. The student reportedly intended to show the weapon to a classmate when it unexpectedly discharged, striking another student.
The statement, signed by DSP Godwin Ahianyo, Regional Public Affairs Officer, said the injured student was rushed to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, where he received treatment and is currently in stable condition.
Police have since arrested the juvenile suspect and recovered the spent cartridge as part of the ongoing investigation. During questioning, the student revealed he had taken the weapon from his father’s bedroom without the father’s knowledge.
Authorities are now working to locate the boy’s father to assist in the investigation, as concerns grow over how the weapon was accessed and brought onto school grounds.
