Poor coordination undermining Nalerigu curfew – MP claims

The Nalerigu/Gambaga MP, Nurudeen Mohammed Mumuni, has expressed deep reservations about the curfew recently imposed on Nalerigu and surrounding communities, describing it as poorly executed and lacking justification.

In an interview on Channel One TV on Sunday, July 27, shortly after the curfew came into effect, the MP noted that compliance among residents was low due to general discontent and scepticism regarding the rationale behind the directive.

“If you consider the curfew that was imposed this afternoon, I can state on authority that while some people in Nalerigu, Gambaga, and nearby areas are abiding by it, many are not,” he said.

“The people are not happy; they feel let down. They see the curfew as unjustifiable and unacceptable.”

Mr Mumuni further criticised the handling of the situation by the security agencies, arguing that the response lacked planning and coherence.

“It appears the security forces themselves were not adequately prepared. Even the leadership, including the Minister for the Interior, seemed to have rushed this decision without proper coordination.”

The Ministry of the Interior, acting on recommendations from the North East Regional Security Council, announced the curfew from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. on Sunday, July 27, 2025, citing increasing insecurity.

A statement from the Ministry urged calm and encouraged the public to pursue peaceful means of addressing their concerns, warning that anyone found with weapons would face arrest and prosecution.
