The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has lost a number of his paramount chiefs, queen mothers and sub-chiefs over the past few months.

While some of the paramount chiefs and queen mothers were removed by the king, himself, he has also lost some of them through deaths.

These traditional leaders the Asantehene has lost occupied very important stools in Asanteman which formed part of the rich history of the kingdom.

The death of these traditional leaders also signify what many believe to be a great loss to the Asante Kingdom and the entire traditional institution of Ghana.

Here are some of the traditional leaders Asanteman has lost in the past 5 months:

Asante Mamponghene

The most recent paramount chief Asanteman has lost is the Asante Mamponghene, Daasebre Osei Bonsu II, whose death was announced to the Otumfuo on April 28, 2025.

Until his demise, Daasebre Osei Bonsu II was the Vice President of the Ashanti Regional House of Chiefs.

He was the esteemed occupant of the Silver Stool of Asanteman, a position of immense traditional significance in the Asante Kingdom.

The occupant of the Silver Stool is the second in command of the Asante Kingdom.

Daasebre Osei Bonsu II, known in private life as Saint Oswald Gyimah-Kessie, was born on December 31, 1939.

He was a lawyer and an economist by profession and previously served as Registrar of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST).

Goasomanhene

The Paramount Chief of the Goaso Traditional Area (Goasomanhene), Nana Kwasi Bosomprah, died in December 2024.

Nana Kwasi Bosomprah, who was installed as the paramount chief of Goaso in 2008, died at the age of 58.

According to customs of Asanteman, the Goasomanhene is the chief palm wine tapper of the Asantehene.

Nana Kwasi Bosomprah was known for openly criticising the erstwhile Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo government and state institutions including the Electoral Commission of Ghana.

The Goasomanhene made news headlines after he wept in public over the lack of development in his area.

He also recently chastised chiefs and pastors for not being truthful about the state of affairs in the country.

Asokore Mamponghene

Nana Boakye Ansah Debrah, the Paramount Chief of Asokore Mampong for 38 years, died in March 2025.

Asokore Mamponghene Ansah Debrah was the Head of the Nifa Division of the Kumasi Traditional Council, the Kumasi Nifahene, for 38 years.

Nana Boakye Ansah was an architect by profession and he gained recognition for his significant contributions to Asanteman.

Asokore Mampong is home to the famous Asanteman deity, the Nyamekese, where the Dormaahene once served as Kradwareni (soul washer).

Asokore Mamponghemaa

The paramount queen mother of Asokore Mampong, Nana Saman Diawuo, also died in March 2025.

She died about two weeks before the death of Asokore Mamponghene Nana Boakye Ansah Debrah.

Nana Saman Diawuo reigned as the queen mother of Asokore Mampong for 52 years.

The paramount queen mother of Asokore Mampong was deeply respected within Asanteman.
