President John Dramani Mahama has ordered an immediate end to the payment of fuel allowances and fuel allocations for all political appointees, in a sweeping effort to cut government expenditure and prioritize national development needs.
According to a statement issued on Tuesday, July 15, 2025, and signed by the Minister for Government Communications and Presidential Spokesperson, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the directive is part of a broader initiative aimed at reducing wasteful spending and redirecting public funds to critical sectors of the economy.
“President John Dramani Mahama has, effective immediately, directed the cancellation of payment of fuel allowances and allocation of fuel to all political appointees,” the statement read.
The move, which forms part of the President’s wider public sector reforms, is intended to send a strong message that leadership must also bear the brunt of sacrifices being demanded of the citizenry in these challenging economic times.
“The President believes that leadership must also bear its part of the sacrifices it is calling on the people to make,” the statement emphasized.
This latest measure follows earlier actions taken by the Mahama administration to reduce the size of government, including the appointment of fewer ministers and downsizing of staff at the Presidential Office.
Additional cost-saving actions already implemented include the cancellation of satellite TV subscriptions for the Presidency and other government institutions.
