The National Communications Director of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Richard Ahiagbah, has described President John Dramani Mahama as a dictator, accusing him of weakening Ghana’s democracy.
His comments come in response to the President’s decision to suspend the Chief Justice, Her Ladyship Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo.
In a post on social media platform X on Wednesday, April 23, Ahiagbah warned that Ghana’s democracy would collapse if the committee tasked with investigating petitions against the Chief Justice recommends her removal.
However, he said the opposition NPP will not sit aloof and allow this to happen.
According to him, they will fight back and resist what he described as the President’s dictatorship.
“Our democracy is on one leg as we speak. If the President’s committee acquiesces to the political plot to remove the Chief Justice, then our democracy would have been crippled entirely under President John Dramani Mahama and the NDC. The NPP will fight back to end this dictatorship,” he stated.
President Mahama on Tuesday suspended Chief Justice Torkornoo with immediate effect, citing a prima facie case established against her in three separate petitions.
The suspension, in accordance with Article 146(6) of the 1992 Constitution, was made in consultation with the Council of State.
A statement from the Presidency, signed by the Minister of State in charge of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, also announced the formation of a committee to inquire into the petitions.
