The Minister for Labour, Jobs and Employment, Dr Abdul-Rashid Hassan Pelpuo, has reiterated that the Mahama-led government is focused on creating inclusive growth through job creation and innovation.
He said this forms a major part of President John Dramani Mahama’s “Building the Ghana We Want” agenda, which aims to transform the country into a hub of opportunities.
Speaking at the 113th session of the International Labour Conference in Geneva on Thursday, June 5, Dr Pelpuo said: “Government’s blueprint is anchored on ‘Building the Ghana We Want Together’, an imperative policy geared towards transforming Ghana into a hub of opportunities, innovation, and inclusive growth.”
“It is a vision that aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), with focus on creating sustainable jobs, reducing inequalities, and fostering economic growth,” he added.
Dr Pelpuo said employment creation is central to government’s social contract with citizens, describing it as a key requirement for maintaining peaceful and harmonious industrial relations.
He mentioned several initiatives being rolled out, including the 24-Hour Economy Policy, Women’s Development Bank, National Apprenticeship Programme, Digital Jobs Initiative, the Big Push, and the Ghana Green Jobs Initiative.
The ongoing ILO Conference, which ended on June 13, is being attended by government, employer, and worker delegates from the ILO’s 187 member states.
Discussions at this year’s session focused on new global labour standards to protect workers against biological hazards, ensure decent work in the platform economy, and promote innovative ways of transitioning from the informal to the formal economy.
