President Mahama not a clearing agent, I’m responsible for all dropped cases – Dominic Ayine

Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Dr. Dominic Ayine, has denied allegations that President John Mahama played a role in the decision to drop criminal cases against certain high-profile individuals.

Dr. Ayine has faced criticism for discontinuing prosecutions involving key figures linked to the previous Mahama administration.

These include the Saglemi Housing Project case, charges against current Bank of Ghana Governor Johnson Asiama, the Democracy Hub case, and the prosecution of former COCOBOD CEO Stephen Opuni.

Some opponents have accused the President of influencing these decisions, but Dr. Ayine firmly rejected such claims.

Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday, February 12, he emphasized that the decisions were made solely by his office and insisted there was no political interference.

“As Attorney General, I take full responsibility for all the decisions so far taken. I am not under any instruction or pressure to discontinue any case or to bring charges against anyone,” he asserted.

Dr. Ayine further rejected accusations that Mahama had acted as a “clearing agent” in the process, emphasizing the independence of his office.

Dr. Ayine reiterated that all prosecutorial decisions were made based on legal merit and not political considerations.

“Those who are in a haste to tag the President of the Republic, John Mahama, as a clearing agent should hasten slowly because he is not responsible for prosecutions and has not directed me to drop any case,” he stated.
