President Mahama orders armed military escort for vehicles operating in Bawku

In response to the deepening security crisis in Bawku, President John Dramani Mahama has ordered the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) to deploy armed escorts for all vehicles operating in and around the conflict-ridden area.

The directive follows a spate of deadly attacks in the region, where ongoing ethnic tensions have led to multiple civilian casualties and heightened fears among residents and travelers. The latest move is part of broader efforts by the government to stabilise the area and prevent further loss of life.

Speaking during his ‘Thank You Tour’ of the North East Region on Friday, June 13, President Mahama reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to restoring peace and ensuring the safety of all Ghanaians in volatile regions.

“Peace is not negotiable. As commander-in-chief, I have instructed the Armed Forces to provide armed escort and protection to all vehicles travelling within the Bawku area. And also along the Walewale-Bolgatanga corridor,” Mahama declared.

His remarks come amid ongoing tensions in Bawku, a town in the Upper East Region that has long grappled with intermittent violence stemming from protracted chieftaincy disputes. Despite various peace-building initiatives over the years, sporadic outbreaks of violence continue to threaten lives and disrupt normal activity in the area.

The President’s directive marks a significant escalation in security intervention, signaling the government’s intent to assert control and rebuild public confidence in the region’s safety. The deployment of armed escorts is expected to offer immediate protection to civilians while longer-term peace processes continue behind the scenes.

As commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces, Mahama’s pronouncement reflects both the urgency of the situation and his administration’s resolve to confront insecurity head-on. Security experts view the measure as necessary to deter further attacks, safeguard humanitarian access, and facilitate economic activity in the corridor that connects key parts of northern Ghana.

Additional military reinforcements and logistical support are anticipated in the coming days as the Armed Forces implement the presidential directive.
