President John Dramani Mahama has formally inducted the newly appointed heads of the Ghana Armed Forces into the Armed Forces Council, reinforcing the administration’s commitment to strengthening the country’s military leadership.
The swearing-in ceremony was held on Thursday at the Ministry of Defence, just ahead of a critical Council meeting focused on promotions, military upgrades, and other strategic decisions.
The commanders who officially took their seats on the Council include Major General William Agyapong, now serving as Chief of Defence Staff; Major General Lawrence Kwaku Gbetanu, Chief of Army Staff; Rear Admiral Godwin Livinus Bessing, Chief of Naval Staff; and Air Vice Marshal Eric Agyen-Frempong, Chief of Air Staff.
Addressing the officers, President Mahama urged them to lead with “discipline, professionalism, and unwavering integrity,” underscoring the vital role the Armed Forces play in maintaining national stability and protecting Ghana’s sovereignty.
The event was attended by several government officials and Council members, including Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Interior Minister Alhaji Mohammed Muntaka, and Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa. Other notable attendees were Presidential Secretary Dr. Callistus Mahama and Special Aide Joyce Bawah Mogtari.
The Armed Forces Council is tasked with advising the President on key issues relating to the military’s structure, personnel matters, and operational efficiency. With the new commanders officially sworn in, the Council is expected to ramp up efforts to enhance the Armed Forces’ readiness and capabilities through regular consultations and targeted reforms.
