Private Health Facility Association withdraws suspension of service to NHIS cardholders

The Private Health Facilities Association of Ghana (PHFAoG) has suspended its decision to halt healthcare services to National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) cardholders, effective immediately.

This development comes after the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) assured the association that outstanding claims owed to service providers will be settled by the close of business on Monday, April 7, 2025.

The PHFAoG had initially announced the suspension of healthcare services to NHIS cardholders due to prolonged delays in reimbursement of claims, which had resulted in a severe financial strain on the private healthcare sector. The association’s decision was meant to pressure the NHIA to address the issue.

However, following an exhaustive meeting with the NHIA management, the PHFAoG received a renewed assurance of payment by the stipulated deadline. “We have been given a renewed assurance of payment by close of business on Monday, 7th April, 2025,” said Dr. Kwame Buabeng-Frimpong, President of PHFAoG in a statement suspending their earlier decision on NHIS cardholders.

The NHIA’s Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Asare Bampoe, reiterated his commitment to ensuring a seamless reimbursement regime during his tenure, aligning with his vision of building a robust health sector in Ghana. “We are dedicated to ensuring that our healthcare system is responsive to the needs of Ghanaians, and we will work tirelessly to achieve this goal,” he said.

In light of this development, all private healthcare facilities nationwide are advised to continue providing healthcare services to NHIS cardholders, ensuring uninterrupted access to medical care. The PHFAoG’s decision aims to maintain a healthy population, aligning with the broader goals of the healthcare sector.

The association has warned that it will readily resort to drastic measures if the NHIA reneges on its promise.
