Professor Ebenezer Oduro Owusu is a former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana Professor Ebenezer Oduro Owusu is a former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana

Legal representatives of Professor Ebenezer Oduro Owusu, a former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana, have issued a rejoinder to a news item making the rounds in the media, originated from article published on gh.studio.opera.com, with the title; “Meet the Youngest Professor in the History of Ghana.”

In a formal letter dated May 17, 2025, legal counsel Richard Osei Anane Esq of Butu Law Centre stated that the article is “false and misleading” and has demanded a full retraction and apology within 30 days of the rejoinder’s publication.

According to the rejoinder, Prof Oduro Owusu has not granted any interview to have informed the publication and has no knowledge of the information used to compile the article.

“I am instructed by my client to state that he has not granted any interview to your reporter(s) to warrant the said misleading publication about his academic profile,” the letter read.

The legal notice further clarified that Prof Oduro Owusu could not have been appointed the “youngest professor in the history of Ghana,” as the article claims, because at age 39, when he returned to Ghana after postgraduate studies in Japan, he joined the University of Ghana as a lecturer, not a full professor.

The article in question highlighted Prof Oduro Owusu’s academic journey, noting that he obtained his MSc and PhD in Agricultural Sciences in Japan and rose through the academic ranks due to his work in entomology and sustainable agriculture.

It further claimed he was appointed a full professor at age 39 in 2010 and lauded his leadership as Vice-Chancellor from 2016 to 2020.

For what it is worth, Prof Oduro Owusu was rather appointed professor at the sge of 49, his lawyer told GhanaWeb.

While Prof Oduro Owusu’s contributions to academia remain notable, his legal team has made it clear that certain claims in the article do not accurately reflect his career trajectory and must be corrected.
