Pupils of Adjoum M/A Basic School in the Aowin Municipality of the Western North Region are facing harsh learning conditions due to inadequate furniture and the absence of an Information and Communication Technology (ICT) centre.
A visit by TV3 revealed a disturbing scene; some children were seated on cement blocks, while others lay on the bare floor to write during lessons. This situation is not only affecting their academic performance but also putting their health and well-being at risk.
The school prefect, Hafis Gilbert Assanah, made a heartfelt appeal to the government and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to come to their aid by providing basic educational infrastructure, particularly an ICT lab.
“We need help. We are pleading with the government and NGOs to build an ICT centre for us so we can learn better,” Hafis said.
Currently, the school has no dedicated ICT centre, forcing the ICT facilitator to use her personal phone to teach digital literacy.
“Because we don’t have any ICT lab or computers, I use my phone to show the children pictures of a mouse, keyboard, and system unit. It’s not enough, but it’s all we have,” she explained.
The headmaster of the school echoed the concerns and called for immediate intervention.
“We are doing our best, but the learning environment is not good. We appeal to government and stakeholders to assist us,” he stated.
The Assembly Member for the area also joined the call, urging both the government and corporate institutions to prioritize the plight of schools like Adjoum M/A.
With the world advancing rapidly in digital education, the lack of basic ICT facilities and classroom furniture continues to widen the gap for children in deprived communities.
