Rushing to elect a new flagbearer without honest reflection a mistake — Dr. Nyaho Tamakloe to NPP

Ghanaian statesman Dr. Nyaho Nyaho Tamakloe has criticised the New Patriotic Party (NPP) over its decision to elect a flagbearer for the 2028 elections without what he describes as honest introspection.

The NPP, which campaigned to break the eight-year governance cycle in the 2024 elections, lost the presidential race by a margin of 1.7 million votes.

As part of efforts to reform, the party’s National Executive Council on Tuesday, June 17, announced that it will elect a new flagbearer on January 31, 2026.

But Dr. Tamakloe, a founding member of the party, says the decision is hasty and appears to favour a specific individual.

“In a party that has just lost a major election, it is critical to conduct a thorough analysis of what went wrong. Rushing to elect a presidential candidate without honest reflection is a mistake,” he said.

“This process appears to be skewed in favour of a particular individual, ignoring genuine concerns raised by notable party figures.”

He blamed the party’s current leadership for the electoral defeat and said a transparent process is needed to restore the party’s credibility.

“The leadership that led the party into defeat cannot be trusted to conduct a credible process that aims at returning the party to power in 2028. We need a transparent, inclusive approach that strictly adheres to the party’s constitution if we are serious about rebuilding the NPP,” Dr. Tamakloe added.

Meanwhile, party stalwarts like former Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong, former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, former Education Minister Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, Abetifi MP Bryan Acheampong, and former General Secretary Kwabena Agyei Agyepong are likely to contest the flagbearer race.
