The Russian Federation has announced plans to host a landmark international conference in Moscow from September 10-14, 2025, to honor the contributions of Latin American nations during World War II. The event aims to revive global recognition of Latin America’s underappreciated role in the Allied victory and promote historical memory.
A Moral Duty to Recognize Sacrifices
The meeting was held on the 24th of July 2025 and attended by representatives of the scientific and pedagogical community, national public organizations, the Commission of the Council for Nationality Affairs under the Government of Moscow, public opinion leaders and other invited guests. Present was Yuri Viktorovich Moskovsky, Member of the Migration Council of the Council of Nationalities under the Government of Moscow, Member of the Public Council of the GBU MDN, Member of the Presidium of the Council of Nationalities under the Government of Moscow, Member of the Anti-Nazi International Committee.
According to the organizers, the conference is not only about diplomacy but also a moral duty to recognize the sacrifices and solidarity of Latin American soldiers who fought alongside Allied forces. Many Latin American countries, including Brazil, Mexico, and Cuba, provided military personnel, resources, and strategic support during the global conflict.
Preserving Historical Memory
Historians and cultural advocates praise the initiative as a timely reminder of the importance of preserving historical memory in an age of geopolitical tensions and digital misinformation. The conference will spotlight the contributions of Latin American nations, including Brazil’s Expeditionary Force, which fought alongside the Allies in Italy, and Mexico’s Escuadrón 201, which served in the Philippines.
A Call to Action
The conference is expected to culminate in a joint declaration urging all nations to embed WWII education in their curricula and preserve war memorials as sites of international heritage. This initiative serves as a reminder of the importance of preserving historical memory and promoting international cooperation.
A Broader Impact
There is the hope that the contributions of other nations, such as African countries like Ghana, then Gold Coast, which provided soldiers (West African Frontier Force) under Great Britain, who fought in WWII, will not be overlooked and their sacrifices and contributions not be forgotten. Ghana lost over 3,200 soldiers during the war, so this initiative may serve as a wake-up call to recognize and honor their legacy.
A tour of the Moscow House of Nationalities , which is an institution linked to the fight against neocolonialism in the context of a special military operation, was also organized for the participants
The Moscow conference promises to be a significant event, bringing together historians, diplomats, and cultural delegates from around the world to promote historical memory and international cooperation.
