Samson Anyenini drags NPP’s Abronye to court for GH¢20 million defamation, GH¢10 million against Ghanaweb

Samson Lardy Anyenini, a respected private legal practitioner and award-winning journalist, has initiated a defamation lawsuit against Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye, the Bono Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

The suit was filed at the Kumasi High Court on April 23 following remarks Abronye made on April 7 during a broadcast on Wontumi Multimedia’s radio and television platforms.

Abronye allegedly labeled Mr. Anyenini a “corrupt person and liar,” claiming that the distinguished lawyer and media figure had accepted bribes to discredit the Assin South Member of Parliament, Rev. John Ntim Fordjour, while hosting the program NewsFile.

Mr. Anyenini vehemently denies these accusations, describing them as baseless falsehoods “calculated to cause maximum damage to his hard-earned reputation and professional standing.”

Alongside Abronye, the lawsuit names Wontumi Multimedia and Kweku Kyeremanteng Nkansah—the host of the program where the defamatory statements were made—as defendants.

Mr. Anyenini also sued Superweb Technologies, the publishers of the online news portal Ghanaweb, at the Accra High Court on April 23 for republishing Abronye’s defamatory comments.

Claims and Demands
In his suit, Mr. Anyenini is seeking general and punitive damages amounting to GH¢20 million from Abronye, Wontumi Multimedia, and Nkansah. Against Superweb Technologies, he is pursuing GH¢10 million in general and punitive damages.

He is also requesting a court declaration that the publication is defamatory and has harmed his reputation.

Mr. Anyenini is also demanding an order requiring the defendants to issue “an unconditional retraction, unqualified apology and complete removal from the internet of the said defamatory broadcast, doing so on all of the defendants’ platforms including their social media platforms, and in the Daily Graphic newspaper.”

Details of the Claim
In his statement of claim, Mr. Anyenini asserts that Abronye, as a guest on the Ghana Talk Show aired on Wontumi Multimedia’s platforms, made the defamatory allegations without any factual basis and with malicious intent.

“The defamatory statements were uttered with malice afterthoughts with 2nd defendant (Nkansah) actively contributing and encouraging 3rd defendant (Abronye) to continue in the conduct while occasionally play-acting to urge restraint, either sincerely disclaiming nor requiring retraction and apology as expected by the standard ethics in the exercise of professional journalism,” the claim states.

Regarding Ghanaweb, the plaintiff alleges that the outlet “recklessly culled a publication from the said defamatory statements and published same on April 8, 2025.”
