Societe Generale Ghana reaffirmed its commitment to environmental sustainability with a hands-on beach clean-up exercise recently at Kumasamba La Bamba Beach, Accra.

The event, dubbed Move For Ocean, brought together SG Ghana employees, local community members, and environmental partner Plastic Punch Ghana, in support of global Sustainable Development Goals 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation) and 13 (Climate Action).

Volunteers tackled plastic waste along the coastline from early morning, collecting and sorting large volumes of single-use plastics, fishing nets, and other debris. This initiative is part of SG Ghana’s broader ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) agenda aimed at reducing plastic pollution and promoting sustainable coastal ecosystems.

“Together, we are taking meaningful steps to protect this section of our ocean, reduce plastic pollution, and champion sustainable coastal ecosystems,” said SG Ghana Managing Director, Hakim Ouzzani, during closing remarks. “This aligns with our ESG goals and the UN’s SDGs 6 and 13.”

An environmental expert led educational session, highlighted the growing threat of marine plastic pollution, which could increase by 190% by 2040 without intervention. SG Ghana also shared its broader sustainability initiatives, ranging from reducing internal carbon emissions to supporting tree planting and clean water projects.

A key feature of the event was the installation of a permanent ‘FishBin’ waste collector at the Kumasamba La Bamba Beach, an ongoing tool for promoting responsible waste disposal among beach visitors.

With eco-friendly practices integrated throughout the day, such as reusable water bottles and biodegradable packaging for refreshments, the Move For Ocean event underlined SG Ghana’s ongoing commitment to sustainable operations and community-driven climate action.

SG Ghana also used the opportunity to call for stronger action against single-use plastics in Ghana. The event wrapped up with a beach soccer match between SG Ghana staff and Plastic Punch Ghana volunteers, strengthening partnerships and rallying continued community involvement
