The Minister for Communications, Digital Technology and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, has criticised former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia for condemning the violence at the Ablekuma North parliamentary rerun.
Sam George, who is also the Member of Parliament for Ningo-Prampram, questioned what actions the former Vice President took to address the violence that happened during the 2019 Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election, in which he (Sam George) was assaulted.
“Someone should tell Bawumia to shut up. What did he say about Ayawaso West Wuogon in 2019?” he wrote in a social media post on Friday, July 11.
Over 6,000 voters across 19 polling stations returned to the polls on Friday to resolve the long-standing impasse over the parliamentary seat.
The Electoral Commission scheduled the fresh polls in areas where results from the 2024 elections were not verified by its officers.
The exercise, however, recorded incidents of violence, with voting at St. Peter’s Polling Station coming to a halt for hours after thugs violently invaded the area and assaulted several people, including journalists.
Earlier, a police officer was captured in a viral video assaulting a journalist covering proceedings at another polling station. The officer has since been interdicted.
Reacting to the incidents in an interview with journalists, the 2024 NPP flagbearer urged authorities to investigate and prosecute those responsible.
“This is not the democracy that we want to see in Ghana. Our supporters are being attacked by thugs in the presence of the police, who have been unable to protect them. The candidate has been attacked. Our deputy national organizer has been attacked,” Bawumia said.
He added, “I call on the President and all those in charge of the country’s administration to take action to bring the perpetrators to book. This is the only way we can deter such acts in the future. And let me assure them that should they not be brought to book, we will not forget. We will make sure they are held accountable no matter how long it takes.”
