Christian Tetteh Yohuno, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), has been instructed by Interior Minister Mohammed-Mubarak Muntaka to begin pursuing anybody involved in acts of violence during the 2020 and 2024 elections.

He asserts that the Ghana Police Service (GPS) must put out great effort to address electoral violence in the nation since the government does not tolerate any kind of violence.

He reminded the IGP of the impending by-election in Akwatia and the necessity of taking preventative action to identify any potential violent outbursts.

“I take this opportunity to remind you of the electoral violence in 2020 and 2024. I have seen the report, and our expectation is nothing short of swift prosecution.

“I also encourage you to collaborate with the Attorney-General’s Department and begin swift prosecution. The government and the party are solidly behind you,” the Minister is quoted as saying by myjoyonline.com.

“Ghana has enjoyed relatively peaceful elections since 1992. However, the recent violence in the Ablekuma North elections exposes certain weaknesses that we must address. You and your team must go through all the evidence at your disposal and deal with those involved. Don’t spare anyone.”

The call was made by Mr. Muntaka on Friday, July 18, during the 17th Regional Commanders Conference held at the National Police Headquarters in Accra.

Mr. Muntaka recently disclosed in his “Government Accountability Series” that the IGP had officially filed thorough reports on the violent episodes that tainted Ghana’s general election.

The IGP reaffirmed the police force’s commitment to combating all types of criminal activity in his speech.

Mr. Yohuno claimed that the administration had achieved several victories during his brief tenure in office, such as the 2020 and 2024 Galamsey fights.
