St. John Bosco’s College appeals for higher admission quota and facility upgrades

The St. John Bosco College of Education in Navrongo, Upper East Region, has appealed to the government to increase its admission quota to accommodate more students.

According to the college authorities, the current quota is insufficient, preventing many qualified applicants from gaining admission.

Speaking at the 13th Congregation Ceremony, Acting Principal Dr. Rudolph Nyaaba emphasized the need for an increase in student intake to help the college generate Internally Generated Funds (IGF) for development.

“The admission quota for the college should be increased to cater for the large number of applicants we receive annually, of which only a few are admitted. A larger student population would allow the college to generate enough IGF to support its developmental needs,” Dr. Nyaaba stated.

Dr. Nyaaba also appealed to the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) for clearance to recruit additional staff, noting that the shortage of both teaching and non-teaching personnel was affecting the college’s operations.

The Acting Principal stressed the importance of refurbishing and retooling the college’s laboratories and workshops to enhance the training of science and mathematics teachers.

“The college’s laboratories, workshops, and equipment are outdated and non-functional. These facilities need urgent refurbishment to meet the standards of TVET colleges of education,” he added.

At the 13th Congregation Ceremony, 318 trained teachers graduated. The breakdown of classifications was as follows:

18 students earned first-class honors
153 students obtained second-class upper division
104 students received second-class lower division
28 students graduated with third-class honors

St. John Bosco’s College of Education is a reputable tertiary institution in the Upper East Region, recognized for academic excellence and discipline. It has a strong reputation for producing highly skilled science and mathematics teachers, many of whom have made significant contributions to society.

The college remains committed to enhancing its facilities and staff strength to improve the quality of teacher training in Ghana.
