Stalled Winneba-Kasoa highway sparks concerns over unpaid contractor arrears

The New Patriotic Party MP for Effutu, Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, on Wednesday raised concerns over the stalled dualisation of the Winneba-Kasoa highway.

Speaking on the Floor of Parliament, he cited the inconvenience the stalled highway posed to commuters.

Mr Afenyo-Markin, who is also the Minority Leader, attributed the delay to alleged outstanding payments owed to contractors, which had led to several of them abandoning their sites.

He said, “Mr Speaker, the Kasoa-Winneba road, the contractor has left the site, and it is making motorists suffer. Mr Speaker, I would like you to let them know that the contractors are working on major roads that need to be completed.”

The Minority Leader’s concerns followed Parliament’s approval of a $360 million financing agreement between the government of Ghana and the International Development Association (IDA) of the World Bank Group on Tuesday.

The agreement aimed to support Ghana’s post-crisis economic recovery and long-term resilience.

Mr Afenyo-Markin called on the government to prioritise paying arrears owed to road contractors to ensure the resumption and timely completion of vital infrastructure projects, adding that “the stalled projects not only hinder economic progress but also affect the daily lives of commuters.”
