Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Manhyia South in the Ashanti Region, has urged Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo to fight the petitions seeking her removal from office.

Speaking on Accra-based JoyNews’ Newsfile on Saturday, March 29, the NPP lawmaker stressed that the President—or any other authority—should not find it easy to remove a Chief Justice.

“She shouldn’t jump; she has to stay, she has to fight. Look, it shouldn’t be easy for a President or anybody to go after a Chief Justice… so she shouldn’t leave. She should stay there and defend her oath,” said the MP, who is also a lawyer.

In an official statement dated March 25, the Spokesperson to the President and Minister of State in charge of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, announced that President John Mahama had forwarded the petitions to the Council of State to commence the consultation process.

The Chief Justice, in a letter dated March 27, requested copies of the petitions to enable her to respond to the allegations.

In response, the President, through a letter signed by Callistus Mahama, the Executive Secretary to the President, granted the request and urged her to submit her response within 10 days.

The President further assured the Chief Justice that due process would be followed in determining whether the petitions would be upheld or dismissed.
